App var expression not always changing properly when written certain way

I have ran into the problem recently where writing something like the following app variable expression, the resulting app variable does not always return the correct true/false value when the other app variable changes:

return (appVar.myAppVarName == 'somevalue1' || appVar.myAppVarName == 'somevalue2');

However, writing it like the following fixes the issue and always returns the correct value when the other app variable changes:

(appVar.myAppVarName == 'somevalue1' || appVar.myAppVarName == 'somevalue2')
