  • Valence 3.0.20110713.0 BETA 3

    Version: 3.0.20110713.0 BETA 3

    Release Date: 2011-07-13

    About this Release:

This is the third beta release of Valence 3.0. These release notes are intended to document what has changed since the last beta release. If you are new to Valence 3.0, read the BETA 2 and BETA 1 release notes first.

THIS RELEASE SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED SUITABLE FOR PRODUCTION APPLICATIONS. We recommend that you download and install this release for exploring new features, prototyping and testing only. There will be at least three beta releases prior to the final release. For more information please read the Valence 3.0 Release Schedule.

    Installing This Release:
    • Go to the downloads page to see what releases are available. If this release is superseded by another release it may no longer be available.
    • This release will install to library VALENCE30 and ifs path valence-3.0. It will also install an Apache server instance named VALENCE30. If you have Valence versions 2.2 and prior installed on your system you may install this release without affecting those earlier versions.
    • If you have previously installed Valence 3.0 BETA 1 or BETA 2, installing BETA 3 will completely overwrite those versions.
    • Once installed you can access the Valence portal with the link http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:7030/valence/vvlogin.pgm where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the ip address of your IBM i.

Major New Features Included in Valence 3.0 BETA 3:
    • Valence Nitro - Valence 3.0 BETA 3 introduces the integrated Valence Nitro Source Editor for the first time. Valence Nitro is optimized for editing Valence JavaScript source code on the IBM i. It includes a robust IFS Explorer and advance syntax checking features making it no longer necessary to install RDi/RDP and Aptana for JavaScript source editing. Valence Nitro is part of the new Valence Enterprise Edition and is included in this BETA 3 release as a 90-day trial. Pricing and ordering instructions for the Valence Enterprise Edition will be coming prior to the release of Valence 3.0 FINAL.
    • Groups and Users administration programs refactored for Ext 4.0 and enhanced for usability.
    • More example programs refactored for Ext 4.0.
    • See release notes for Valence 3.0 BETA 2, and BETA 1 for a list of more features added since Valence 2.2.

Bug Fixes Since Valence 3.0 BETA 2:
    • Corrected bug in vvOut_execSQLtoJSON that was causing mixed case where clauses to not function correctly.
    • Fixed many other core issues as part of the normal beta testing process.

Still To Come with Valence 3.0 FINAL (expected by End of July 2011):
    • All remaining admin programs refactored for Ext 4.0
    • All remaining example programs refactored for Ext 4.0
    • Introduction of Valence Instance Manager with the Valence Enterprise Edition
    • Literal translations (seven languages) for all portal and portal administration programs included with Valence
    • Updated Valence manual and API documentation
    • Updated video demos
    • See the Valence 3.0 Release Schedule for more information.

    System Requirements:
    • Any hardware running the IBM i operating system V5R4 or higher. Existing customers on previous versions of Valence at V5R3 will not be able to upgrade to this version until they are at V5R4 or higher. A personal computer running Windows XP, Vista or 7 (for installation only).
    • A compatible browser on client computers. This version of Valence should work in newer versions of Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer as well as WebKit-based mobile device browsers like those on iPhone, iPad and Android.
    • 5722ST1 is required to use AutoCode, and for the ability to recompile many of the Valence core programs.
    • If you would like to use the PDF and/or Email capabilities of Valence then you need 5722JV1 *BASE and option 6, Java Developer Kit 1.4. This is installed on most systems by default. After installing this version of Valence, just try to run the PDF and email examples. If they work then you know for certain your system has the correct configuration. Note that even though Java is required, you do not need to know or use Java to develop PDFs or send emails with Valence. You will use the Valence RPG Toolkit procedures, which use certain Java functions behind the scenes.
    • Many Valence Nitro functions rely on QSHELL, which is 5722SS1 option 30. This is already installed on the vast majority of systems.

If you need assistance with installing this release please email support@cnxcorp.com.

    Valence 3.0 beta 3

Love the direction you are taking the product with Nitro. Any chance you guys are thinking about doing a browser based RPG editor?

Yes, in fact we are thinking about it. Can't say when it might come out though. Our short-term focus is still improving the front-end development process.

        RPG Editor

Awesome! With that, I think you guys have a shot at becoming the de facto standard for modern RPG development!

          Valence in the cloud?

I know I have more suggestions than solutions sometimes, but here is another one:

VAAS - Valence as a service!

Where a developer can pay you guys a reasonable monthly fee for a dedicated valence server instance in the "cloud". ValenceAir (just saying!). Seeing as how IBM seems to be dragging their feet on making IBM i available in the cloud, maybe you guys could fill in the gap a little, if for no one other than developers.

          What do you think?
