  • Valence 3.0.20110509.0 BETA 1

    Version: 3.0.20110509.0 BETA 1

    Release Date: 2011-05-09

    About this Release:

This is the first beta release of Valence 3.0. Please read this entire post before installing.

THIS INSTALLATION SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED SUITABLE FOR PRODUCTION APPLICATIONS. We recommend that you download and install this release for exploring new features, prototyping and testing only. There will be at least three beta releases prior to the final release. More information on the Valence roadmap will be released in the coming days.

    Installing This Release:
    • Go to the downloads page to see what releases are available. If this release is superseded by another release it may no longer be available.
    • This release will install to library VALENCE30 and ifs path valence-3.0. It will also install an Apache server instance named VALENCE30. If you have Valence versions 2.2 and prior installed on your system you may install this release without affecting those earlier versions.
    • Once installed you can access the Valence portal with the link http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:7030/valence/vvlogin.pgm where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the ip address of your IBM i.

Major New Features Included in Valence 3.0 BETA 1:
    • Sencha Touch 1.1 for developing mobile apps.
    • Valence Touch Portal. The Portal now automatically detects the device type and shows the correct interface (desktop or touch). Currently we are only testing the Touch Portal functionality with iPhone and iPad. Testing and refinement for Android will come in a later beta.
    • Ext JS 4.0.0. For backward compatibility, Ext JS 3.2.2 is also included.
    • Fusion Charts 3.2. New charting package is backward compatible with previous version. Many of the charts can now automatically render in HTML5 where Flash is not available (i.e., iPhone/iPad).
    • Portal (desktop) refactored for Ext JS 4.0.0.
    • On the desktop Portal, you can now configure it to use a menu to launch programs instead of a navigation tree. You can also switch between environments without having to log out.
    • The Settings and Languages apps have been refactored for Ext JS 4.0.0 (other apps are forthcoming). Settings has been enhanced to build dynamically based on a backend configuration, thus allowing easy addition of your own custom settings.
    • New Touch-based example programs for showing a List and a Form that are wired to the same RPG programs as their desktop counterparts. More touch examples will be provided with later beta releases.
    • New logic for caching lists on the back-end, allows for faster rendering of combo boxes, etc.

    Other Notes About this Release:
    • This release is currently a mix of Ext 3 and Ext 4 code. Additional Ext 4 apps and examples will be made available in later Beta releases.

    System Requirements:

Any hardware running the IBM i operating system V5R4 or higher. Existing customers on previous versions of Valence at V5R3 will not be able to upgrade to this version until they are at V5R4 or higher.

A personal computer running Windows XP, Vista or 7 (for installation only).

A compatible browser on client computers. This version of Valence should work in newer versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Chrome as well as WebKit-based mobile device browsers like those on iPhone, iPad and Android.

5722ST1 is required to use AutoCode, and for the ability to recompile many of the Valence core programs.

If you would like to use the PDF and/or Email capabilities of Valence then you need 5722JV1 *BASE and option 6, Java Developer Kit 1.4. This is installed on most systems by default. After installing this version of Valence, just try to run the PDF and email examples. If they work then you know for certain your system has the correct configuration. Note that even though Java is required, you do not need to know or use Java to develop PDFs or send emails with Valence. You will use the Valence RPG Toolkit procedures, which use certain Java functions behind the scenes.

If you need assistance with installing this release please email support@cnxcorp.com.
